Alberto Fujimori served as President of Peru from 28 July 1990 to 17 November 2000. By 1992, Shining Path guerrilla attacks had claimed an estimated 20,000 lives over the course of 12 years of unrest in Peru. President, Alberto Fujimori has been credited by many Peruvians with ending that fifteen-year reign of terror of Shining Path and restoring the country to macroeconomic stability.
During his presidency nearly 300,000, mostly indigenous, women were coercively or forcefully sterilized.
Fujimori was accused and finally convicted of of human rights abuses and corruption committed during his 1990-2000 term. He fled Peru and went to Tokyo, where he submitted his presidential resignation via fax. Fujimori, now 75, is serving a 25 year sentence in a Peruvian jail.
